Did Netflix drop the ball on Devilman Crybaby?

With Netflix flying out of the gate with yet another Netflix original.

And yet another remake... maybe.

Netflix took a crack at the classic 1970s - 90s Manga/Anime series, Devilman.

I finished the entire Season 1, Friday night (series premiere) and I was soooo juiced to see what Netflix would make of this bad ass classic. And after finishing episode 1, I was sure that I was going to have my wig snatched clean off from this roller-coaster of a remake...

But slowly I noticed something things. And sadly, the ride came to an early end for me.

I mean, I remember being in High School in the 90s and watching Devilman: Demon Bird, and losing my pubescent SHIT!  The content & imagery was so overwhelmingly vibrant!  I just knew this was the best thing ever and it found its way into my life.  Just like Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star, Bio Booster Armor Guyver, Vampire Hunter D, Demon City, Vampire Wars and many more.

But back to what I personally thought about the show...

1.  Although Episode 1 was a great opener, I felt let down as the show progressed. But it was very reminiscent of the old classic. Small right? Just wait.

2. I wasn't really feeling the "Crybaby" part, and felt like they relied on that a little to much, simply because it's in the shows title.  I though it very unnecessary to constantly convey to the audience that the main character, Akira Fudo, was a sensitive human being, and that he was in fact still human because he cried... a lot. 

3. I will say, I did see that the shows creators put parts of the movies in the episodes, but it felt rushed.  Or at the last moment, they decided, "Hey, let's millennial this thing up a bit, it doesn't have to be my Dad's anime!"  Totally left me wanting more. (sigh.)

4. Why did they have to rush some of the best freaking battles ever!?!? I truly believe that the audience, old & new, would have loved to see those old school colossal battles played out with new techniques and animation styles. 

1.  Was this supposed to be a remake of the old or was it just using bits and pieces to create something new... A new stand alone?  Hell, I just don't know at this point.

2. I didn't fully understand why they had to overly sexualize EVERYTHING!  And trust me, I love my hentai, so I am no prude, but it seems like they were just overdoing it because they wanted to push the limits of so called being avant garde. It only came off looking like a kid that found his Dad's porn stash, and couldn't get enough and visualized it all day and all night. Over killed it. The porn at school, the girls humping at school,  the sex clubs, the masturbation, secret voyeur photo shots of unsuspecting girls, rape of said girls.  They just tried to damn hard.

3. For goodness sake, please tell me you noticed the poor fucking quality of the animation!!! Castlevania had 20x the quality as this series, and got less shows in S1. So again, it goes to my point of the fell of RUSHING.

4. And did anyone else notice how much religious imagery was in this show? Again, over doing it, just because.

As of now, 1.6.2018, I have not a fucking idea what Netflix is doing, when it comes to their Anime division. They cut us short with the fan-fucking-tastic CASTLEVANIA. I still don't know what the hell they were thinking with NEO-TOKYO. And now this.

Netflix will only get one more damn time with me and my time. I just can't with the "half-ass-ness." LOL.

But hey, I never read the manga. But I'm pretty sure that I am on point with this one. Also, if you think I'm way off base, please let me know. And by all means, still, watch it for yourselves.

I am giving it 4.5 / 10. But enjoy! (smiles.)
